A new entrance celebration, a soccer victory, surprise awards, and classmates catching up with each other in perfect fall weather—what more could you ask for in a homecoming celebration?

All this and more was the experience for hundreds of alumni who returned to Bryan College Oct. 1-3 to celebrate “The Road Home,” this year’s homecoming theme. Landes Way, the new entrance to the college, winds past the Townhouses at Bryan Commons and a new softball field to the roundabout connecting it with Mercer Drive and the rest of the campus.

In his remarks at the entrance dedication, President Stephen Livesay paid tribute to his predecessors “who created their respective pieces of this puzzle that I have had the privilege of collating to see their dream become a reality.” He gave a special thanks to Brett and Lori Landes whose special gift “enabled us to pull the trigger and finally move dirt” for the entrance.

He pointed out that Christ Above All is prominently posted on the portals flanking the new entrance. “May our motto serve as a cornerstone upon which everything attempted and accomplished on this hill is forever established. May this college never sully the name of Jesus Christ nor betray its birthright. May He be exalted and to Him be all the glory and praise.”

Alumni and students enjoyed a 5-0 homecoming soccer victory over Virginia Intermont before the awards dinner Saturday night. During the dinner Gary Conner, ’79, was named Alumnus of the Year; Nathaniel Goggans, ’00, was named Young Alumnus of the Year; Michael Palmer, associate professor of communication studies, was named an Honorary Alumnus; Ronnie Cox, ’89, was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame for basketball; and Boe Barinowski, ’85, Carlos Vega, ’79, and Francisco “Cisco” Cleaves, ’81, (who thought he was present to help honor Carlos) were inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame for soccer.
