Diamond Holbert Signing

(Left-to-Right: Hunters Lane HS coach JoAnn Tribue; Diamond Holbert; Bryan College coach Jamy Bechler)

NASHVILLE, TN (4/25/08) — In front of an enthusiastic crowd in the Hunters Lane High School auditorium, Diamond Holbert signed a Letter of Intent to continue her basketball career at Bryan College today.

Holbert, a 5’6” combo guard, was Hunters Lane’s MVP while averaging 12 points per game. She played for Coach JoAnn Tribue, a 2007 Nashville Metro Hall of Fame Inductee.

“Having Diamond in our program next year is a positive addition,” said Coach Jamy Bechler. “She is an explosive scorer off the dribble. She gives us versatility by her ability to play the point or the scoring guard positions. We also like her ability to defend and believe that her quickness will help us, especially in the AAC.”

Holbert said that she decided on Bryan College “because of its’ Christian atmosphere, the student-to-teacher ratio, Coach Bechler, and the players. After visiting Bryan and comparing it to the other schools, I felt it was the place for me.” She chose the Lady Lions after receiving much interest from DI programs Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Tennessee State and Belmont.

Before a knee injury sidelined her for her junior year, Holbert attended perennial power, Brentwood Academy, from 6th-10th grade.

The Bryan Lady Lions have earned a trip to the NAIA National Tournament four out of previous five seasons. During that time, they have won three Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships.

Holbert is the first Nashville area recruit for the Bryan College program in nearly 15 years.

“Nashville is a great area for basketball, said Bechler. “We have normally recruited local in the past. However, when a player of Diamond’s caliber comes along, we need to do what we can to bring her into our program. The men’s program has done well with Nashville recruits in recent years. We hope to sign a few more girls from Nashville in the near future.”
The Bryan College men’s basketball team had a total of five Nashville players on their team this past season.

Holbert is the daughter of Dyrena and Cleveland Anthony and plans on studying Exercise Health Science and Education at Bryan College.

Shea Thomas Signing

WHITWELL, TN (5/2/08) — After a high school career that saw her accumulate more than 1,000 points, 300 assists and 300 rebounds, Whitwell’s Shea Thomas signed a letter of intent to continue her playing career at Bryan College.

Thomas, a 5’8” guard, was the 2007 District 6-AA Player of the Year. She was a four-time All-District Player. This past year, she averaged nearly 19 points per game, which was 6th best in the Chattanooga Times-Free Press area. She also averaged a little more than 3 assists and steals per game for Coach Eric Zensen’s squad this season.

“We are glad that Shea will be joining us next year,” said Coach Jamy Bechler. “I have been watching her since early in her junior year. She is a good scorer and knows how to put the ball in the basket in a number of ways. She is a good athlete and really takes pride in her defense. Shea is also a good student, so she’ll fit right in with our team.”

Thomas chose Bryan College over Montreat College, Toccoa Falls College, and Cleveland State Community College.

This past summer, Thomas was selected to attend the TENNESSEE TOP-100 WORKOUT for Tennessee’s top players.

“Shea is an outstanding leader and basketball player,” said Whitwell coach Eric Zensen. “Shea is a very smart player and solid defender. I always use Shea to guard the opponent’s best player. She is an extremely hard worker and very coachable. I am glad that she is going to Bryan. I think it is a good fit.”

Zensen scored more than 2,000 points while playing for Bryan College. In addition, his father is athletic director at Bryan.

Thomas is the daughter of Jeff and Sherri Thomas of Whitwell, TN.

Bradley Lowers School Record With Win At Smoky Mountain Twilight

Knoxville, TN - Bryan College sophomore Josh Bradley (Ringgold, GA) set a new school record of 1:50.34 for the 800 meter run on his way to victory at the Smoky Mountain Twilight. The event was hosted by UTK on Tom Black Track. Teammate and freshman Zach Mobley (Ooltewah, TN) finished a close second in 1:51.22. Freshman Colby Smith (Dayton, TN) set a personal best running his first sub two minute 800 meters with a 6th place finish in 1:58.27. Bradley and Mobley now own the top two times in the NAIA.

Sophomore Daniel Goetz qualified for the NAIA National Championship in the 3000 meter steeplechase by finishing second in 9:36.87. Bradley, Mobley, and Goetz will be joined by teammates Andrew Dorn and Guillermo Loaiza at the Championship in St. Louis, Missouri on May 22nd - 24th. Dorn and Loaiza will compete in the marathon.

"We finally got some decent weather and a fast track. I knew Josh was ready for a performance jump and he took advantage of the opportunity. Mobley was just off his personal best and they are looking good at the right time of the year. They went with the quick early pace and had enough to get around to talented UT athletes," said coach Rodney Stoker. "Colby has come along way in a short time and I can't wait to see what his future will bring," continued Stoker. "Goetz is tough. He has run about 15 times in the last 8 weeks and somehow found a way to qualify for St. Louis. I told him this is a different type of challenge and he went with it. His experience payed off and I'm happy for him," stated Stoker.
